  1. Who can attend the English Preparatory Program?

Students who enroll in a department/program where the medium of instruction is English and cannot obtain a valid score in the English Proficiency Exam are required to attend the English Preparatory Program.

  1. I enrolled in a department whose language of instruction is Turkish; but I want to study English Preparatory School. What should I do?

During registration, you must indicate to the relevant departments that you want to attend the optional English Preparatory Program.

  1. I enrolled in a department/program where the medium of instruction is English. However, my English level is very good and I do not intend to study English Prep Program. What should I do?

During registration, you must come to the School of Foreign Languages booth and state that you want to take the English Proficiency Exam. If you are unable to come the school, you must indicate to the Secretary of the School of Foreign Languages that you want to take the English Proficiency Exam.   1. What is the English Proficiency Exam?

The English Proficiency Exam is an exam that all newly registered students with an English department take at their own request. The exam is held before the class starts and the results are announced. Students who get 60 out of 100 points from the English Proficiency Exam held at the beginning of the academic year are exempt from the English Prep Program and start their education in the programs in which they are place. Students, who do not take the exam or cannot score 60 or higher, attend the compulsory English Preparatory Program. They receive intensive English education to improve their English level.

  1. Which language documents and scores are valid for exemption from the English Proficiency Exam?

If students have received enough points from one of the foreign language exams accepted by YÖK or the international foreign language exams accepted as equivalent, they are exempted from foreign language preparatory class education, provided that they do not exceed the certification and validity period.

  1. I enrolled in a department/program where the medium of instruction is English. However, my English is very bad and I should definitely attend English Prep Program. Do I have to take the English Proficiency Exam?

No. If your English level is not sufficient, we do not recommend taking the English Proficiency Exam. We recommend that you take the Placement Exam for English Preparation Program.

  1. What is the English Placement Test?

The English Placement Exam is an exam that all students, who are newly enrolled in our university and whose departments are in English, take upon their request. The exam is held and the results are announced before the semester starts. Students who do not take the English Proficiency Exam or who cannot get the required score (60) take this exam to determine their English Proficiency level before continuing to the English Preparatory Program. They are placed in classes at the appropriate level according to their scores from the exam. The classes are announced at the orientation program.

  1. Do I have to take the English Placement Exam?

In order to be placed in the class that is suitable for you, you must take the Placement Exam. If you do not take the exam, you will start studying in the lowest level class.

  1. How can I find out which class I was placed in?

In the Orientation Program organized before the classes start, the students are given information about the class they are in and the course schedule.

  1. What is the Orientation Program and do I have to attend?

In the Orientation Program, you will be informed about the English Preparation process. You can find the answers to the questions about which level you will start, your course schedule, textbooks, advisors and absenteeism in the Orientation Program. That’s why; it is very important that you participate.

  1. What is the duration of the English Preparatory Program?

English preparatory class is an academic year and the maximum period of study is two years. The academic year consists of fall and spring semesters. The normal duration of each of the fall and spring semesters is seventy working days. Exam weeks or days are not included in this period.

  1. What are the books used in the English Preparatory Program and where can I get them?

In the Orientation Program, our students are informed about the books used in the English Preparatory Program and where to get them.

  1. Is there an obligation to attend classes in the English Preparatory Program?

Yes. Prep Program students are required to attend minimum 85% of courses. Absenteeism limit is calculated according to total class hours for each term and students are informed about the limits at the beginning of academic year.

  1. How can I find out how many hours I am absent?

Students can follow their course attendance through the Student Information System (OBS).

  1. What happens if I exceed the absenteeism limit?

If students exceed the absenteeism limit, they lose their right to take the last midterm and English Proficiency Exam at the end of the year. Those who exceed the absenteeism limits are not allowed to take Proficiency Test given at the end of the Prep. Program.

  1. I could not attend the English Proficiency Exam held in June due to absenteeism. Can I take the next exam?

Yes. You can take the English Proficiency Exam to be held in September.

  1. I could not collect enough points to take the English Proficiency Exam. When can I take the next exam?

You can take the English Proficiency Exam to be held in September.

  1. I failed the compulsory preparatory program in two years. What should I do?

Students who cannot successfully complete the English Prep Program within two years are dismissed from the program they are placed in. These students; upon request, they can enroll in an equivalent program at the University whose language of instruction is Turkish. In case there is no equivalent program at the university and they request it; students can be placed centrally in one of the programs whose language of instruction is Turkish, provided that the student’s university entrance score is not lower than the base score required to enroll in the program in which he or she will be placed, for one time only, by OSYM.

  1. Where can I find the dates of the English Proficiency Exam, English Placement Exam and Foreign Language Course Exemption Exam?

You can find out the exam dates from the academic calendar of our university. Since there is no make exam, all students must take the exam on the specified date.

  1. What is the Foreign Language Courses Exemption Exam?

It is the exam that all our students who have newly registered to our university and whose department is in Turkish, take on their own request. It is opened as ING101 Exemption Exam at the beginning of the fall semester and as the ING102 Exemption Exam at the beginning of the spring semester.

  1. What exactly is the ING 101 Exemption Exam?

The English Exemption Exam is an exam that all students, who are newly enrolled in our university and whose departments are in Turkish, take upon their request. The exam is held and the results are announced before the semester starts. Students who take this exam and get 55 points and above are exempt from English (ING101) course that they must take in the first year fall semester. The exam is a multiple-choice exam that measures basic English knowledge. Those who do not take this exam or who do not pass the 55-point limit must take ING101 course in fall semester when they start their first year. There is no make-up for this exam. The grade students get from the Exemption Exam is forwarded to the relevant faculty and their exemption status is sent to the Student Affairs Office from their faculties.

  1. What exactly is the ING 102 Exemption Exam?

The English Exemption Exam is an exam that all our students who are newly enrolled in our university and whose department is in Turkish, enter upon their request. The exam is held before the spring semester begins, and the results are announced. Students who take this exam and get 55 points or more are exempted from the English (ING102) course that they must take in the first year spring semester. The exam measures general English knowledge and consists of multiple choice questions. Students who do not take this exam or fail to pass the 55-point limit must take ING102 in the spring semester of their first year. There is no make-up for this exam. The grade students get from the Exemption Exam is forwarded to the relevant faculty and their exemption status is sent to the Student Affairs Office from their faculties.

  1. I took the ING101 Exemption Exam and was exempted. Do I also need to take the ING102 Exemption Exam?

Yes. ING101 covers the fall semester. ING102 covers the spring semester.

  1. How can I find out my ING101 and ING102 Exemption Exam Result and letter grade?

  1. I studied in the optional English Preparatory Program for one year and passed the English Proficiency Exam. Can I request ING101 and ING102 exemptions?

Students who are successful in the optional English Preparatory Program are exempted from the common compulsory Foreign Language I and Foreign Language II courses. The success grade of the exempted students is transferred to the student information system as “AA”.

  1. I previously studied English Preparatory School at another University and successfully completed it. What should I do to be exempt from the English Preparatory Program?

Those who successfully complete the English Preparatory Program of Istanbul Gedik University, other universities in the country and universities in the TRNC are valid for three years, provided that they are documented. If your certificate is over 3 years, you must take the English Proficiency Exam organized by Istanbul Gedik University.

As stated in the Istanbul Gedik University Exemption and Adaptation Directive, students must apply for an exemption within fifteen days from the date of their first registration to the University in order to be exempt from the courses they have taken and succeeded in the higher education institutions they previously studied in the semester/year they registered.

The exemption application is made once. No exemption can be requested from the courses whose exemption is rejected and whose application is not made in due time.

The student has to apply to the relevant dean’s office/directorate with a petition and a transcript of the course content approved by the higher education institution, which he/she has previously taken and succeeded, with a form indicating which of the courses/courses he/she has taken before and which he/she is exempt from. Applications made with photocopies, faxes, unapproved documents and missing documents will not be evaluated.
