The Regulation on the Duties, Authorities, and Responsibilities of Engineers or Technical Personnel Responsible for Occupational Safety and Health, published by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, makes it mandatory for workplaces to employ engineers and technical personnel responsible for occupational safety and health.

Graduates of the program can work as “Occupational Health and Safety Technicians” in all institutions, organizations, and enterprises responsible for providing occupational health and safety services. They can be employed in commercial centers, multi-story high-rise buildings, schools in university campuses, shopping malls, public centers, fire departments, civil defense, and similar emergency response organizations. If they pass the examination conducted by the Ministry, they can continue their careers as “Class C Occupational Safety Specialists.” Istanbul Gedik University Vocational School’s Occupational Health and Safety Program supports students’ knowledge and experience throughout their education with interdisciplinary and practical courses, industry collaborations, fieldwork, and organized events. The aim is to produce individuals who can integrate innovative practices into their professional lives, create added value, and make continuous learning a way of life.

According to publications by the International Labor Organization (ILO), out of 2.8 billion workers worldwide, 270 million experience work accidents, and 160 million suffer from occupational diseases. Every year, 2.2 million workers lose their lives due to work accidents or occupational diseases.

To prevent these losses, improving working conditions, raising awareness about occupational health and safety in society, and creating a safety culture are essential, along with lifelong learning and education.

In our country, professionals providing Occupational Health and Safety services include workplace physicians and occupational safety specialists. The schools where these two professional groups are trained are medical faculties, engineering faculties, technology faculties (technical education faculties), physics and chemistry departments of science and arts faculties, and vocational schools’ Occupational Health and Safety programs.

Within the framework of the laws on harmonization with the European Union process, legislation requires the mandatory employment of professionals responsible for occupational safety in all workplaces.

Graduates of the program can work as “Occupational Health and Safety Technicians” in all institutions, organizations, and enterprises responsible for providing occupational health and safety services. They can be employed in commercial centers, multi-story high-rise buildings, schools in university campuses, shopping malls, public centers, fire departments, civil defense, and similar emergency response organizations.

In this context;

  • Creating a healthy and safe environment,
  • Eliminating hazards at their source,
  • Allowing the working individual to focus entirely on the job in this environment and produce quality service,
  • Reducing legal, moral, and financial responsibilities resulting from any accident to a minimum and increasing the company’s profit are aimed.

As a result of theoretical and practical training, students will be able to:

  • Ensure the safety of workplace working management and be knowledgeable about Occupational Health and Safety record-keeping, filing, and monitoring management.
  • Perform legal procedures related to disaster-based full emergency situations.
  • Provide consultancy services in communication and organization with professional emergency organizations and neighbors in the region, primarily in workplaces.
  • Perform risk analyses, propose solutions, and plan and budget accordingly.
  • Be equipped with planning and management knowledge related to environmental safety.
  • Provide consultancy services in communication and organization with professional emergency organizations and neighbors in the region, primarily in workplaces.
  • Obtain the required language knowledge for their profession.

With its advantageous location in terms of industrial presence in Kartal, Pendik, and Tuzla regions on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, which is continuously developing and contributing significantly to the country’s economy, there is a need to open this program for the training of Occupational Safety Specialists, which is mandatory to be present in all workplaces according to the Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331.

To graduate from the program, students are required to complete the specified courses and credits within 4 semesters and complete a 20-day internship.

Post-Graduation Opportunities

After graduation, the program’s graduates can work as technicians in all institutions, organizations, and enterprises responsible for providing Occupational Health and Safety services, regardless of the industry. If they complete the relevant training and pass the examination conducted by the Ministry, they can work as Class C Occupational Safety Specialists. They can also establish Occupational Health and Safety services (OSH providers). They can work full-time within a company. They can work in public institutions. They can plan academic careers by continuing their education. With relevant training, they can work abroad.
