Ertan KIYAK, our Visual Communication Design Program alumnus, who is also currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Visual Communication Design (Thesis Program), has earned the opportunity to receive International Education from IP Academy and achieved 3rd place. We wish our graduate student success throughout his life as he continues his education in the field of Comic Book Art.

The Visual Communication Design Department’s students who created animation films for radio gedik to be used on social media were awarded for their successful works. On March 5, 2020, at the Kartal Campus, the “Gedik Radio Animation Film Awards” were presented to our department’s students by our esteemed Board of Trustees Chairperson, Mrs. Hülya Gedik.

 

  • 3 ‘Music Workshops’ Organized in Collaboration between the Visual Communication Design Department and Gedik Art

On October 1st, November 19th, and December 3rd, 2019, three ‘Music Workshops’ events were held in cooperation between the Visual Communication Design Department and Gedik Art at the Kartal Campus, B Block Conference Hall. These music workshops featured Serkan Bali & H. Ali Toker as guests and presented classical music by integrating fun and innovative approaches.

 

  • The Panel on Pioneering Women in History was held.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, a “Panel on Pioneering Women in History” was held on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at the Kartal Campus Conference Hall. The opening of the program was marked by a flute concert by the University Art Advisor, Assoc. Prof. Nihan Atalay. Following the concert, Prof. Mehmet Zaman Saçlıoğlu, a faculty member of the Visual Communication Design Department, shared his interview book titled ‘Güneş Umuttan Şimdi Doğar Türkan Saylan’, where he discussed the time spent together during the preparatory period, as well as the works of Prof. Dr. Türkan Saylan, her efforts in putting an end to Leprosy in Turkey, and her establishment and growth of the Çağdaş Yaşamı Destekleme Derneği (Association for the Support of Contemporary Living) to provide more educational opportunities for women in Anatolia and enable them to participate in social life on equal terms.

The second speaker of the panel, Asst. Prof. İlknur Hacısoftaoğlu from Istanbul Bilgi University, gave a speech titled “The Woman Connecting the Past with Today; Halet Çambel,” where she presented the works of Prof. Dr. Halet Çambel, who was the first female athlete to represent Turkey at the Berlin Olympics and her studies in the field of archaeology, particularly her work at the Adana Karatepe excavations, and the collaborative efforts with her husband, Nail Çakırhan. Another faculty member from the Visual Communication Design Department, Asst. Prof. Ayşin Şişman, delivered a presentation titled “The Woman Beyond Biography; Halide Edib,” where she portrayed the position of Prof. Halide Edib in the history of the Women’s Movement in Turkey and conveyed the female and social reality in her novels and writings within the framework of Eastern and Western cultures. The presentations, enriched with videos and visuals, received great interest from the students.

  • A Conference and Workshop titled ‘My Way’ was held.

As part of the events organized by our Visual Communication Design Department, the conference titled ‘My Way’ by director-illustrator Fatih Sinan Şimşek took place on December 3, 2018, at 14:00.

Born in Istanbul in 1985, Fatih Sinan Şimşek’s passion for art began when his family noticed his talent as a child, and it has carried him through to this day. Şimşek dedicated 10 years of his career to the major agencies of the Turkish advertising industry before establishing his animation studio, Gorilla, in 2015. With Gorilla, he provided services to prominent brands and masters in the advertising and cinema sectors.

To enhance his art, the artist traveled the world and followed great masters, becoming known on the streets with the nickname “Gorilla” for his paintings on selected walls at night. Fatih Sinan Şimşek describes himself by saying, “I am here to reveal my identity related to the art I have created on the streets until now.”

After the conference, our esteemed guest, director-illustrator Fatih Sinan Şimşek, conducted an enjoyable workshop with the enthusiastic participation of the students. Combining the students’ drawings with his experimental style, the artist delivered an entertaining performance on stage. As the Visual Communication Design Department, we extend our gratitude to Fatih Sinan Şimşek for his valuable contributions

  • Our Visual Communication Design Department student, Oğuz Yıldız, participated in the ‘Bürkan Özkan Workshop’

The Graphic Design Department of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, in collaboration with the Graphic Designers Professional Organization and Aydın Doğan Foundation, organized Grafist 23 (23rd Istanbul Graphic Design Days) held from November 11 to 14, 2019. This year’s theme, ‘Line, Tram, Pixel,’ presented a program consisting of workshops, panels, seminars, and presentations.

Our student from Istanbul Gedik University’s Visual Communication Design department, Oğuz Yıldız, participated in the ‘Bürkan Özkan Workshop.’ We congratulate our student and wish them continued success.

  • Interview with Nebil Özgentürk

As part of the annual event program of our Faculty of Architecture and Design, a conversation with renowned documentary filmmaker Nebil Özgentürk was held on February 21st, Thursday, in B Block conference hall.

The program began with the screening of Sabahattin Ali Documentary prepared by Özgentürk. Afterwards, Nebil Özgentürk answered the questions posed by Prof. Mehmet Zaman Saçlıoğlu and shared memories and experiences from his documentaries with the audience. At the end of the conversation, Nebil Özgentürk signed his books.

  • Visual Communication Design Department Exhibition

At the exhibition, showcasing student works from the Visual Communication Design Department at Istanbul Gedik University, visitors were informed about the professional areas of the Visual Communication Design Department through 2D and 3D presentations.

  • The “Now/Memory” Exhibition was held at Summart Art Center with the participation of esteemed professors.

The Visual Communication Design Department of Istanbul Gedik University, in collaboration with Gedik Sanat and Summart, participated in the “Now/Memory” exhibition held at Summart Art Center from November 12 to 29. The exhibition featured artworks by the faculty members of the Visual Communication Design Department, Prof. Hayriye Koç Başara and Asst. Prof. Ruhcan Akil.

  • Assistant Professor Ruhcan Akil and the students of the Visual Communication Design Department were guests on Gedik Radio.

On November 21, 2019, Asst. Prof. Ruhcan Akil, one of the artists from the exhibition “Now/Memory” organized in collaboration with Gedik Sanat and Summart, was a guest on the radio program of Gedik Art Advisor Caner AKGÜN. During the program, Asst. Prof. Ruhcan Akil discussed the topic of Troy with reference to her artwork titled “Troya Önünde Atlar” (Horses in Front of Troy).

In another part of the radio program, students from the Visual Communication Design Department of Istanbul Gedik University contributed to the broadcast with a discussion on mythology, which led to the exhibition at Gedik Sanat. The students had the opportunity to visit the Istanbul Gedik University Campus in Teşvikiye and observe and experience the technological environment of the Gedik-Radio studio, which was beneficial for them to understand their professional practice areas.

On January 23, 2020, Visual Communication Design Department Faculty Member Prof. Mehmet Zaman Saçlıoğlu was a guest on the program ‘Bozca Adamdan Sesler’ with Süleyman Güner at Gedik Radio, where they had a conversation about literature and writing.

Visual Communication Design Department students Melis Genç and Sezer Özçamur hosted the ‘Kafa Kafaya’ program on Gedik Radio, meeting with listeners every Wednesday during the Autumn semester.

On Wednesday, May 6, moderated by Caner Akgün, Prof. Hayriye Koç Başara, a faculty member of the Visual Communication Design Department, presented a live chat on Istanbul Gedik University’s official Instagram account about Visual Arts, the Visual Communication Design department, and collaborative events with Gedik Sanat, introducing the department.

  • Visual Communication Design Department Students at the “Butterfly Effect” Exhibition

On November 21, 2019, the students of the Visual Communication Design Department were taken on an educational trip to the “Butterfly Effect” exhibition of the late Prof. Kadri Özayten, one of the workshop instructors at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, at the Milli Reasürans Art Gallery. The trip was organized under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Ruhcan Akil and Asst. Prof. Emel Birol. The exhibition showcased examples of the artist Kadri Özayten’s paintings, print works, collages, and video works based on his life story from the early 1970s to the early 2000s.

  • 38th Graphic Design Exhibition

On November 13, 2019, as part of the GİT 121 Basic Design I course, students from the Visual Communication Design Department visited the 38th Graphic Design Exhibition, one of Turkey’s oldest and most established graphic design events, organized by the Graphic Designers Professional Organization and Mimar Sinan University since 1981. The educational trip was led by Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Ruhcan Akil and Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Emel Birol.

The exhibition took place at the Tophane-i Amire Cultural and Art Center of Mimar Sinan University, showcasing selected and current examples of graphic designs.

 

  • Visit to Abdülmecit Efendi Mansion

Students of the Visual Communication Design Department enjoyed a delightful educational trip to Abdülmecit Efendi Mansion, accompanied by our esteemed professors Prof. Hayriye Koç Başara, Asst. Prof. Emel Birol, Asst. Prof. Ruhcan Akil, and Asst. Prof. Ayşin Şişman, who provided valuable information. During the trip, they also visited the exhibition titled “The Child Within Me,” which was organized as part of the 16th Istanbul Biennial.
