In order for our students to graduate from the Mechanical Engineering program, in addition to all the courses in our education plan, they must pass at least 60 working days of workplace practice (internship).
Istanbul Gedik University Mechanical Engineering Department internships are 60 working days and consist of 3 parts.
1ST INTERNSHIP – WORKSHOP INTERNSHIP (20 WORKING DAYS):
There are 4 types of workshop internships; Machining, Chipless Forming, Casting and Welding. The student completes his/her workshop internship in two sections of his/her choice, each of which consists of 10 working days, for a total of 20 working days. Different types of workshop internships can be done in different workplaces at separate times or in the same workplace, but a workshop internship type must be completed in exactly 10 working days at a single workplace. 1.1-Machining Internship; Machining internship covers machining methods such as turning, milling, planing, shaping, broaching, grinding, drilling (drilling, expanding, reaming, countersinking), very fine chip removal (honing, superfinishing, lapping). Machining Internship content; Machining methods and workshop layout in the workshop, Examination of the machining benches in the workshop, their technical specifications, the tools and apparatus used, Examination of the operations that can be done on the relevant benches as a process, Examination of the definitions, production stages and technical drawings of sample production parts. 1.2-Chipless Forming Internship: Chipless forming internship covers chipless (plastic) forming methods applied to metals in the form of hot or cold forming and such as free forging and pressing, forging and pressing in molds, extrusion, rolling, wire drawing, sheet metal forming (cutting, bending, drawing, plastering, etc.), welded and seamless pipe manufacturing, special forming methods. Chipless Forming Internship content; Chipless forming methods and workshop layout in the workshop, Examination of chipless forming benches and their technical specifications in the workshop, Examination of technical drawings and pre-production processes of sample production part or parts, Examination of molds used in the production of parts and their assembly on the bench, Production process and stages, Examination of production errors that may occur in the part or parts and the applied quality control studies. 1.3- Casting Internship: Casting internship covers sand mold casting, gravity (metallic) mold casting, centrifugal casting, precision casting, pressure casting, continuous casting and special casting methods and molding techniques specific to these methods. Casting Internship content; Examining the foundry layout and workflow diagram, Examining the technical drawings of the casting part or parts to be produced, Examining the sizing calculations, drawing and production stages and storage conditions of the casting part or parts models, Examining the sizing calculations, drawing and production stages of the casting cores, Examining the molding stages, runner-exit-feeder positions and additional precautions taken against casting defects, Examining the furnace used in melting the casting material and its technical specifications, Examining the casting furnace charge calculation, chemical composition control and analysis report, Examining the processes related to the application of the casting, mold disruption, cleaning of the casting part, Examining the quality control studies applied to the casting part or parts in the foundry. 1.4-Welding Internship: Welding internship; It covers gas fusion welding (Oxy-Gas welding), electric resistance welding methods (spot resistance welding, seam resistance welding, bulge resistance welding, butt burning welding, butt pressing welding), electric arc welding methods (MMA, TIG/WIG, MIG, MAG, UP, Plasma etc.) and special welding methods. In addition, in case of application in the enterprise, other joining techniques such as rivet, solder and adhesive bonding should also be considered. Welding Internship content; Examination of the welding shop layout, Examination of the existing welding equipment in the welding shop, Examination of the technical drawing of the welded part, Examination of the processes applied to the part or parts to be welded before welding, Examination of welding parameters and auxiliary elements, Examination of the welding application, Examination of the processes applied to the welded part after welding, Examination of destructive and non-destructive testing methods on the welded part.
- The Workshop Internship is a prerequisite for other internships. The Business and Organization and Professional Field Internship cannot be started without completing the Workshop Internship.
- A Workplace Introduction must be included in the first pages of the internship notebook prepared for the Workshop Internship. This section should be added to the first day and theoretical information and practice should be mentioned for the same day.
2ND INTERNSHIP – BUSINESS AND ORGANIZATION INTERNSHIP (20 WORKING DAYS):
Business and organization internship covers production, planning and management, quality control organization and application information in the factory where the internship is held. It consists of two parts: business internship (15 working days) and organization internship (5 working days). The content of the business internship, which is 15 working days (3 weeks), is as follows; Examination of the factory’s land layout plan, the factory’s transportation problems, the number of employees in the factory, the number of engineers and administrative staff in the factory, its capital, factory capacity and future targets, Examination of the products and by-products produced in the business, workflow diagrams in product acquisition, machinery and benches, Examination of workflow types in manufacturing, assembly lines, machinery park, time study studies, Energy facilities of the business; auxiliary facilities (compressors, heaters, evaporators, coolers, repair-maintenance workshops, raw material warehouses, etc.) in terms of scope and capacity, examination of the work in the R&D department of the business, examination of the quality control organization and quality control techniques (modern certification in the business), examination of the purchasing organization, warehouse, material and business organization, vehicles and all card systems used. The content of the organization internship, which has an internship period of 5 working days (l week), is as follows; examination of the management organization chart and chain of command, examination of the marketing department studies, examination of domestic and international organization success graphs and targets, detailed examination of the accounting department, detailed examination of the personnel department.
- It is necessary to make a Workplace Introduction on the first pages of the internship notebook prepared for the Business and Organization Internship. This section can be specified as days.
3RD INTERNSHIP – PROFESSIONAL FIELD INTERNSHIP (20 WORKING DAYS):
The scope of the vocational field internship varies according to the student’s request in relation to the sector in which the enterprise operates. The general content of the vocational field internship, regardless of the sector of the enterprise; The sector in which the enterprise operates, the work it does, its capacity, the general organizational chart of the enterprise and the work areas, duties and functions of all departments and units on this scheme are examined. The scope of the vocational field internship is as follows according to the sector of the enterprise: Heat process sector; steam production and utilization, heating, cooling, industrial air conditioning systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, furnaces, measurement and automatic control systems, physical, chemical and biological processes used in production, production lines and mechanical installations. The company operating in the manufacturing sector must include two types of workshop internship that have not been done before. (As in the workshop internship practice, different types can be done in different enterprises). The student does these two workshop internship parts, which have not been done before, by expanding them to be in the vocational field internship content as stated above. Construction sector; mechanical design activities, computer-aided package programs, analysis and testing activities to support the design activities carried out. Hydraulic sector; hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Automotive sector; automotive sector production units, authorized service services and spare parts-sub-industry production.
Students are required to make a Workplace Introduction on the first pages of the internship notebook prepared for the Vocational Field Internship. This part should be added to the first day, theoretical knowledge and practice should be mentioned for the same day.
