The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics falls within the realm of multidisciplinary sciences and is regarded as a practical art. Nutrition, seen both as a science and an art, plays a pivotal role in the betterment of individual and societal health. Health encompasses the complete well-being of an individual and healthy individuals are the cornerstone of healthy societies. Among the various environmental factors influencing health, nutrition stands out as the most significant. Nutrition is instrumental in averting individual and societal health issues such as overconsumption (obesity) and deficiencies in protein, energy, and vitamins. Dietitians assume responsibility for the lifelong management and oversight of an individual’s nutrition.
Dietetics is an increasingly recognized profession that offers a broad spectrum of career opportunities for graduates. Healthcare services constitute the primary field of practice for dietitians. They provide clinical and outpatient services, especially within institutions for post-operative and pre-operative care, and in specialized units (obesity, diabetes, oncology, cardiology, etc.). Within healthcare organizations, dietitians are referred to as medical nutrition experts. With the growing depth of the scientific foundation of nutrition, like in other professions, specialized fields of expertise have emerged. Prominent areas of specialization include sports nutrition and nutrition management for diabetes. Other career avenues encompass education and menu supervision/management (primary and pre-primary schools, nursing homes, hotels, and restaurants), promotion and marketing of diverse food and nutritional supplements, as well as personalized nutrition counseling center services.
The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, situated within the Faculty of Health Sciences, will admit its inaugural students during the 2018-2019 academic year. Graduates from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics are granted the title of ‘dietitian.’
