About the Department

Istanbul Gedik University, Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Health Sciences, was established on 07.03.2018 and started its educational activities in the 2018-2019 academic year.

Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation is a scientific discipline that is effective in treating movement disorders caused by many diseases, disabilities, and impairments that have emerged before or during childbirth or later in life, in acquiring new functions in the body and regaining lost function, developing independence in daily life, relieving pain in the musculoskeletal system, and improving quality of life.

A physiotherapist is a healthcare professional who plans and implements preventive physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs for healthy individuals within the scope of health preservation and improvement, as well as determines the physiotherapy and rehabilitation needs of patients diagnosed by physicians using profession-specific measurement and evaluation methods. They plan and implement the patient’s physiotherapy and rehabilitation program accordingly. To become a physiotherapist, successful completion of a 4-year undergraduate program in this field is required. Graduates from the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation department work autonomously with an interdisciplinary approach in open and equal professional relationships with other healthcare professionals.

The scope of work for physiotherapists is expanding day by day. These include orthopedic problems, neurological diseases, cardiovascular and respiratory system diseases, rheumatological diseases, pediatric diseases, sports injuries, hand injuries, post-surgery issues, obstetric and urogynecological conditions, brain surgery, plastic surgery, and general surgery-related health problems, newborn care, premature birth care, continuous care and resuscitation, home care, intensive care, pain management, and preventive rehabilitation, among others.

After completing a total of 240 ECTS credits of courses by the end of the 8th semester, our students graduate with the competence to make decisions about and perform physiotherapy and rehabilitation practices carried out in public and private hospitals, clinics, health centers, sports organizations and clubs, health, sports, and fitness centers, healthy living centers, public health centers, schools, schools for disabled children, private education and rehabilitation centers, private medical centers, special branch centers, care and education centers for children and the elderly, rehabilitation centers for mental, visual, and auditory disabilities, municipalities, ministries, home care centers, and centers for individuals with illnesses or disabilities, and they receive the title of “physiotherapist.”

In addition to clinical practice, physiotherapists can advance academically by pursuing master’s and doctoral education and conducting research in their field.

Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation is a field that involves techniques for measuring and evaluating the physical functions of body systems, as well as physiotherapy and rehabilitation approaches and interventions that increase quality of life and enhance functional capacity. Therefore, our department’s curriculum is designed to apply comprehensive assessment and measurement methods, organize the results obtained from these methods, implement physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs, and apply evidence-based practices in rehabilitation and community-based rehabilitation, taking into account the importance of multidisciplinary work and knowledgeable, ethical, humanistic, and professional approaches.

Admission Criteria for the Program

Students are admitted to the program based on their YKS (Higher Education Institutions Exam) numerical score.

Double Major

Our students have the opportunity to pursue a double major with the Nutrition and Dietetics, Child Development, and Nursing departments.

Transitions via Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS) are possible from the following programs:

  • Physiotherapy Associate Degree Program
  • Therapy and Rehabilitation Associate Degree Program

Student Clubs: There is one student club in the department, which is the Gedik PTR Club.
