SPECIAL SUMMER SCHOOL ON MIDDLE EAST
In the summer term of 2023-2024 Academic Year, Istanbul Gedik University’s Department of Political Science and International Relations (English) will organize a special summer school program for PSIR 368 course titled “Society and Politics in Modern Middle East”.
Summer school will be held between 16 July 2024-2 August 2024, and the sessions of last three days of the summer school will take place in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Students have the option to follow these sessions online as part of the final phase without travelling to Beirut. However, students are required to indicate this preference during registration.
The summer school program will take place in coordination with the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Beirut and will be carried out according to the updates to be received from the Embassy about the security situation in the region before the visit.
The deadline for online application and course registration for the program is 27 June 2024, Thursday. Students who will participate in the Beirut trip will need to contact the Department of Political Science and International Relations by 5 July, Friday and submit the necessary documents for the trip.
The details about the program are as follows:
Language and Participants:
The program will be conducted in English and will be open to foreign and Turkish students enrolled at Istanbul Gedik University or other universities. The summer school course will be registered as an undergraduate course. Undergraduate students from other departments, as well as graduate students from any department are required to contact their departments to have this course counted as one of their own courses.
Coordinator:
The program will be coordinated by Assist. Prof. Selim Sezer, who is an expert in this field. Other faculty members and experts will contribute to the program as well.
Program Structure:
The program will consist of two phases; a total of 14 sessions will be held in Türkiye and Lebanon. In the first phase, eight theoretical sessions will be organized at Istanbul Gedik University. The remaining 6 topics will be elaborated in the field.
Theoretical Sessions:
In the theoretical phase, in addition to the course coordinator Selim Sezer, experts from within and outside the university will organize sessions on different themes such as “Middle East Political History”, ” Middle East in Global Politics”, “Political Economy of the Middle East”, “Turkey and the Middle East”, “Current Issues in the Middle East”, “History of Lebanon”, and “Current Issues of Lebanon”.
Field Study:
In the final phase of the program, a three-day trip to Beirut, Lebanon will be organized.
The field study in Lebanon will include sessions on “History and Society in Lebanon”, “International Relations of Lebanon”, “Lebanese Food and Culture”, “Religion and Politics in Lebanon” and “Turkish-Lebanese Relations”, which we aim to hear from the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye.
The main places planned to be visited within the scope of this trip are as follows:
- Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Beirut,
- American University of Beirut, Saint-Joseph University, and other Lebanese universities deemed appropriate by the Turkish Embassy Education Counselling Office,
- Sites that are important for Lebanese political history,
- Representatives of leading political parties and associations,
- Refugee camps in Beirut (depending on the security situation).
Credits:
The program will be recorded as a 3 credits / 6 ECTS course, and a certificate of attendance will be given to participants who request it.
Participation Fee:
The participation fee of the program depends on the type of registration.
Partial participation: The participation fee is 11,750 Turkish liras for students who will attend the lectures in Istanbul and follow the sessions in Lebanon online.
Full participation: The participation fee is 28,000 Turkish liras for students who will participate in the Lebanon trip in addition to the classes in Istanbul. This fee covers all courses of the summer school equivalent to 3 credits, travel and hotel expenses to Lebanon. Other personal expenses are the responsibility of the participants.
Quota:
A minimum of 5 people must register for the program to be opened. There is no maximum quota for partial participation.
For the Lebanon part of the program to take place, at least 3 of the registered students must register with the full participation option. The maximum quota for full participation is 12.
