Assoc. Prof. Dr. Deniz Akçay Balcı brought gender bias in algorithms to the agenda at the Symposium at Istanbul Okan University
Istanbul Gedik University Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture, Department of Visual Communication Design faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Deniz Akçay Balcı participated in the 2nd International Symposium on Women in Audiovisual Culture hosted by Istanbul Okan University between 17-19 April 2025 and presented a paper.
Assoc. Prof. Balcı presented a paper titled “Coded Prejudices: Algorithms, Media and Women’s Representation”, she drew attention to structural biases in digital technologies, women’s representation in media content and gender inequality in algorithmic decision-making processes. In the presentation, it was emphasized that artificial intelligence and algorithms have the potential to reproduce social norms despite their claims of neutrality, and a critical perspective was presented at the intersection of media and technology.
